A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. During a colonoscopy, a colonoscope is inserted into the rectum with tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon. A key advantage of this technique is that it allows both imaging of abnormal findings and also therapy or removal of these lesions during the same examination. This procedure is particularly helpful for identification and removal of precancerous polyps.
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is an exam used to evaluate the lower part of the large intestine (colon). During a sigmoidoscopy exam, a sigmoidoscopeis inserted into the rectum with tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the rectum, the sigmoid colon and most of the descending colon. If necessary, tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken.
An upper endoscopy EGD is a procedure that examines the esophagus, stomach and first portion of the duodenum (small intestine) using a long flexible tube with a camera at the end of it. The scope is inserted into the mouth and advanced to the small intestine. An EGD test is a diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedure used to help in the diagnosis or treatment of stomach/duodenal ulcers, inflammation, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), cancer, or dysphagia (swallowing problems) and other problems in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Esophageal dilation is a procedure that allows our doctors to dilate, or stretch, a narrowed area of your esophagus (swallowing tube). A doctor might perform the procedure as part of a sedated endoscopy. Alternatively, a doctor might apply a local anesthetic spray to the back of your throat and then pass a weighted dilator through your mouth and into your esophagus.
